American League wins the 2018 Midsummer Classic
The 2018 Midsummer Classic was the 89th edition of the All-Star game and the fifth time it was held in the nation's capital, at the home of the Washington Nationals of the National League. Amazingly, both conferences held the same number of wins coming into the contest (43) and that added additional bragging rights to the drama that unfolded. The American League won the previous contest held at Marlins Park in Florida, while the National League had not won the classic since 2012 and several teams were represented by at least three players, including Seattle Mariners, Cincinnati Reds and Boston Red Sox. The Americans scored first in the second inning, added another in the third to take a 2-1 lead through the seventh inning stretch and increased their lead to 3-1 before the Nationals responded with two runs in the bottom of the ninth to send the game into overtime. However, the Americans would score 3 in extra innings to win the game 8-6 for their 6th straight victory. MLB All-Star Game tickets are available now for purchase or sale via StubHub.
2018 MLB All-Star Game sets homerun record
There were ten homeruns hit during the 2018 MLB All-Star Game, which broke the previous best of six. Each league scored five, all of which delighted the 43,843 spectators in attendance, and it was also the second straight game to go into extra innings. The first overtime edition of the Midsummer Classic was the 1950 game held at Comiskey Park in Chicago, where the Nationals won after a marathon 14 innings, however the 1967 and 2008 games hold the record for most innings at 15. The shortest ever game occurred in 1952 after rain halted the contest, and since the Nationals were leading 3-2, they won the game after just 5 innings. Legendary players Hank Aaron and Willie Mays have appeared in the most All-Star games, while Jim Palmer holds the title for most homeruns by a pitcher (3). All-Star games are one of the showpieces of MLB and have evolved into an extravaganza of exciting fun for spectators, especially the Homerun Derby, which is held the day before.
