MercyMe Moves Around
In 1997, the group relocated from Oklahoma to Nashville, Tenn., in hopes of signing with a record label. After a year in Nashville, it moved to Dallas, Texas, and recorded an album before settling in Greenville, Texas, where the group served at the Highland Terrace Baptist Church. In Greenville, MercyMe used an old abandoned daycare building to set up a makeshift studio and living area. Here, it recorded six independent projects. In 2001, the group signed with INO Records and released its first major debut album, Almost There. The single called "I Can Only Imagine" received the Song of the Year Dove Award in 2002, but it wasn't until three years later that the song gained mainstream success and rocketed MercyMe into the hearts of millions of adoring fans.
