Before his music career sent him into the stratosphere, Rivera was a shy child. Struck early by tragedy when his father died in a plane crash, he started singing in his church, laying the groundwork for an extraordinary talent. At 17, Rivera started writing music influenced by R&B legends such as Prince and Stevie Wonder, learned a multitude of instruments and found his own voice on the New York club scene under his stage name. His growing popularity led to a contract with Columbia Records in 1994, and set about work on his debut.

Maxwell's first album Urban Hang Suite went platinum within a year of release, and instantly raising his profile to the level of his idols. In 1999, he hit the jackpot with single 'Fortunate', an R.
