How the Marriage of Figaro opera came to be
Alongside the The Magic Flute, The Marriage of Figaro has become a constant part of the top ten Operabase list. It belongs to the list of frequently staged operas like Verdi’s La Triviata and Bizet’s Carmen. Before it became one of the most frequently staged classics, it was based on the masterpiece that was initially banned in Vienna. The 1784 stage comedy Mariage de Figaro by Pierre Beaumarchais was so controversial that Emperor Joseph II had to censor it. Da Ponte secured approval from the emperor to stage an operatic version by taking out the political references. The Mozart-Da Ponte collaboration began when the former chose to work with Beaumarchais’s stage play. Da Ponte rewrote the drama in Italian poetry in a brief six weeks before they got the approval of the emperor. Only after receiving royal consent was Mozart able to begin creating music for the comic opera version.
