A singer and songwriting talent from Bathgate in West Lothian, Scotland, Lewis Capaldi has gained an ever-widening audience since he first burst onto the music scene in 2017. The artist initially toured with a youth music project known as Hit The Road, a few years before embarking on his first solo dates. According to many critics in Scotland and elsewhere, Capaldi has been the one to watch ever since. Certainly, his army of fans know this. Capaldi took the extraordinary step of booking Glasgow’s King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut venue for a gig in January 2017, despite the fact that he had only released one song online up to that point. It was a sell-out event and marked the arrival of a potentially major force in Scottish music.
Lewis Capaldi's music and career
The singer songwriter's debut single, “Bruises”, was uploaded early in 2017. In the first two weeks after being made available on the Spotify music streaming service, it accrued over a million plays. At the time, Capaldi spoke of the themes explored in “Bruises”. He said that at times the memory of an old relationship can become clouded. This means that people only seem to remember the best reasons for being with someone, rather than focusing on the reality. Essentially, “Bruises” is a track that looks directly into the truth of failed relationships and discusses the idea of holding on or going back as something that is more enticing than it actually would be.
Following the release of his initial track, Capaldi's vocal talent was widely praised. His distinctive and powerful voice was referred to by Clash magazine as one that has the uncanny ability to turn personal and poignant lyrics into songs that have a universal, even poppy, appeal. The vocalist's style has already established itself as one that offers indie rock fans and general pop music enthusiasts something that will satisfy. At times, it is possible to detect his Scottish accent, too.
Later in 2017, Capaldi elected to release a further one-off single for digital download and streaming. This was a track entitled “Lost On You”. Like “Bruises”, the song turned out to be incredibly popular on Spotify, with millions of streams to its name within a short period of time. Soon afterwards, the singer set out on a UK-wide tour to promote his music. The performer ended up selling out every date on that tour as momentum gathered around his growing popularity.
In September 2017, Capaldi announced via social media that he would be undertaking a new string of dates in the autumn of that year. He has been chosen by Rag 'n' Bone Man to open shows across the length and breadth of Europe.
