The road from a fairy tale classic to a beloved ballet
Although the story of Cinderella, which originated in China and tells the tale of a girl who finds her Prince and escapes her mean-spirited stepsisters and stepmother with the help of a fairy godmother, is known to have more than 1,500 versions, most people are familiar with the version of Cinderella that was adapted to film by Walt Disney. The same modern Cinderella tale has also been brought to life with a full-length dance production originally scored by Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev, who began work on the piece in 1940. The first landmark Cinderella Ballet premiered in Moscow, Russia on 21 November 1945 and has since been adapted by various choreographers and dancers around the world. Other well-known productions that have sold out their Cinderella Ballet tickets include those by Sir Frederick Ashton for the Royal Ballet, Rudolf Nureyev for the Paris Opera Ballet, and Ashley Page for the Scottish Ballet.
The brilliant composer behind the unforgettable score
Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev was one of the most world-renowned composers of the 20th century. In addition to his work on the Cinderella Ballet, Prokofiev is recognised for his work on popular children's story Peter and the Wolf, the ballet Romeo and Juliet, and the Second Violin Concerto. In 1940, the composer began work on Cinderella, collaborating with Nikolai Volkov. Temporarily pausing during World War II to complete a more time-sensitive piece, War and Piece, Prokofiev finished the music for Cinderella in 1945. The musical themes throughout the ballet include love, magic, woodwind sounds, powerful drums and waltzes. He attempted to project into his music the turmoil of Cinderella's life with her stepsisters and stepmother, the charm and dreaminess of the Prince, the love they develop, and the happiness Cinderella finds at the end. This gifted musician brought to life through his beautiful and heart-breaking composition one of the most well-known fairytales of our modern age.
