Joe Jackson Biography - From New Wave Rock to Jazz Flecked Pop
Born in 1954 in Staffordshire, David Jackson began playing the piano at a young age, after insisting his father install one in their home. Continuing to hone his skills as he grew, his talent was noticed and he was offered a scholarship to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London. After completing his studies he changed his name to Joe, believing he resembled the puppet character Joe 90, and set his sights on a career as a professional musician. By 1978 one of the demos he had recorded had been picked up by A and M Records and alongside his new band, their debut album Look Sharp! was released to critical acclaim, with single 'Is She Really Going Out With Him?' seeing commercial success in 5 countries.
Crafting a New Wave and rock sound similar to the likes of Elvis Costello, second album I'm the Man saw similar success in 1979, with single 'It's Different for Girls' charting at number 5 in the UK. After splitting from his original band, the singer's 1982 solo album Night and Day reached the top ten in the UK and US. He started to incorporate jazz and salsa into his sound and by the mid '80s was producing original albums like Body and Soul. By the late '90s he had expanded further, this time into classical music, winning a Grammy award for Symphony No. 1. Since then he reunited with his original quartet for album Volume 4 and more recently released his 19th studio record Fast Forward in October 2015.
