DeGale captures historic UK boxing gold medal
James Frederick 'Chunky' DeGale learned to box as a young boy first as a member of the Trojan Club and later with Dale Youth Boxing Club, developing his skills with both hands, though he was a natural southpaw. His first major amateur contest was at the 2007 AIBA World Boxing Championships, where he lost to eventual silver medallist Alfonso Blanco of Venezuela, but at the Games in 2008 in Beijing, China, he proved his mettle by advancing to the final, where he met and defeated Emilio Correa of Cuba to capture the UK's only gold medal of the competition and the first major highlight of his career. DeGale is part of a talented crop of British boxers that includes Ricky Hatton, Amir Khan and Chris Eubank Jr. Capitalising on his gold medal success at the Beijing Games, DeGale turned professional later in 2008 and was named in Queen's New Year Honours of 2009 as a Member of the Order of the British Empire for his historic win. The meteoric rise of a Super-middleweight champion
DeGale's defeated Georgian Vepkhia Tchilaia on points to record his first professional victory and in 2010, he faced fellow Brit Sam Horton for the open WBA International Super-Middleweight title, claiming the title in a 5th round TKO. By 2011, DeGale was one of the hottest properties in professional boxing with an unblemished record of 10-0, capturing the British Super-Middleweight crown as well. That May, he faced off against Brit George Groves and lost by majority decision (MD), costing him both title belts and his first professional defeat. However, DeGale would prove his exceptional talent winning the European Super-middleweight title five months later, reeling off thirteen consecutive victories that included a unanimous decision (UD) against American Andre Durrell for the open IBF Super-middleweight crown. A second loss at the hands of Caleb Truax was avenged shortly thereafter to regain the title that he later vacated to pursue more lucrative fights. On 23 February 2019, DeGale met Chris Eubank Jr. in a highly publicised match over 12 rounds for the vacant IBO Super-Middleweight title that Eubanks won by unanimous decision.
