IAAF World Championships history
Despite their first even occurring in 1983, the idea of an annual Athletics World Championships has been circulating since the late '70s. Despite the Olympics giving athletes the chance to test their skills, the 4-year gap between every Olympics is actually what gave rise to the World Championships we know today. With the first major competition hosted at the Helsinki Olympic Stadium, an unprecedented 1,300 athletes competed, representing a total of 154 countries. Only 20 years later, the IAAF World Championships, this particular competition in Paris, boasted 1,907 athletes representing 2o3 countries. A competition of many firsts, the competition holds a special place for female athlete's, as the tournament can boast being the first to host a number of women's events including pole vault, triple jump, hammer and the 5000m race!
IAAF World Championship's most successful countries and athletes
Over the years the country to have earned the most medals actually stands with the United States, who can boast a total of 323 medals, 143 of them being gold. Coming in at second place is Russia with 170, and Kenya with 128. With the 2017 World Championship set to be hosted in London, Great Britain will be looking to accrue their own medals from this incredible competition. Fans of track and field may well know of the extraordinary sprinter Usain Bolt, whose time at the IAAF World Championships has earned him a total of 13 medals, making Jamaica proud. Other athletes to have made a mark in the competition include Spaniard race walker Jesus Angel Garcia, American sprinters LaShawn Merritt and Kendra Harrison.
