HC Slovan Bratislava road to the KHL
Slovan Bratislava started as a football club in 1919 but created a hockey division of the club in 1921 under the name 'CsSK Hockey' and changed its name to Slovan Bratislava in 1939. HC Slovan Bratislava played its first official game in 1924 against Werder EV, losing the match 6-1, and it would be forty years before the team would win a title in the Czechoslovakia First Ice Hockey League in 1978-1979. Following the break-up of Czechoslovakia, Slovan competed in the Slovak Extraliga, where it recorded eight championships before joining the KHL in 2012, where the team came up against clubs such as HC Dinamo Riga, CSKA Moscow hockey and Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg. HC Slovan Bratislava played its inaugural KHL contest against HC Donbass and, though it lost on opening night, the team recorded its first victory versus Spartak Moscow 2-1 in an exciting extra overtime contest. They ended their maiden season in third place in the Bobrov Division, earning their first trip to the Gagarin Cup playoffs. HC Slovan Bratislava tickets are ready now to buy or sell via StubHub.
Slovan Tipsport Liga and international success
HC Slovan Bratislava has found more success at home in its domestic professional league, the Slovan Tipsport Liga, otherwise known as the Slovan Extraliga. Since the founding of the league back in 1994, HC Slovan Bratislava has won a total of six regular season titles, including three straight wins from 1998-2000 and another three from 2000-2010. The team is also an eight-time winner of the Vladimira Dzurillu Trophy, winning its first crown in 1998, repeat titles in 2007-2008 and again in 2012. In addition to glory at home, HC Slovan Bratislava can also claim success abroad: third place at the 1980 IIHF European Champions Cup; another third place finish at the IIHF Continental Cup in 2000-2001 before winning the title in the 2003-2004 season and three straight Spengler Cup victories in the early 1970s. Some of the former heroes of this club include Marian Stastny, Jan Lipiansky and Zdeno Ciger, who coached the team to Slovan Extraliga titles from 2006-2009.
