Born on the Stockholm Islands
Established as a football team in the central Stockholm district of Södermalm on 13th August 1915, Hammarby IF obliterated the opposition and won its first ever game 5-0 only five days later. Originally a working-class neighborhood, Södermalm has become gentrified in modern times, yet fans of the club, known as Bajares, still see the little island as the heartland of their team. After a period of ups and downs in various Swedish leagues, Hammarby IF maintained a stable period in the Allsvenskan, Sweden's top division, in the 1970s and 1980s. In 1970, with star players Kenneth Ohlsson and Ronnie Hellström and a growing, singing, chanting fanbase, Hammarby IF finished fifth in the Allsvenskan and remained undefeated for a large portion of the season. This was the clubs best running so far, until 2001, when led by manager Sören Cratz, the team managed to secure their first ever top division title. With Hammarby IF tickets now available to buy and sell via StubHub, you can be a part of this evolving history.
Samba! Hollywood fans, and a lot of noise!
With a history grounded in such a dense and changing area of the city, Hammarby IF has gained a socially, politically and economically diverse fanbase. Notable followers include Hollywood superstars Alexander Skarsgård and Joel Kinneman, as well as the late writer and illustrator Stig "Slas" Claesson. The majority of the Hammarby IF fanbase, however, still come from working-class roots, developing a proud sense of identity in their adoption of Kenta Gustafsson's Just idag är jag stark, a song about staying strong in the face of adversity, as their official anthem. The passion can only be experienced first-hand, amongst a crowd that were named the 11th noisiest in the world in 2008 by a prominent sports broadcaster. Aside from bringing chants and songs to Swedish football from England, fans also looked to South America for inspiration. In the 1982 finals against IFK Göteburg, supporters brought their own live samba band to accompany their wails! Who knows what this lot could come up with next!
