The story of "The Gruffalo" is based on an old Chinese folk tale. In the original story, a young girl convinces a tiger that she is Queen of the Jungle. She proves this by inviting the tiger to walk behind her as they stroll through the jungle. The tiger believes that the terrified animals are scared of the little girl. Donaldson expanded on the story for her version, creating a whole world of animals inside the forest, and using her poetic skills to build a rhythm that captivates children, even when they're too small to understand the story.
