Gregory Porter biography: jazzman finds pop crossover success
Born in Sacramento, California, Porter was initially on track to become a professional football player, before a full athletic scholarship to San Diego State University was ended by shoulder injury.
After the tragic passing of his mother, who encouraged him to follow his dreams and become a singer, Porter moved to New York to pursue his goal. Early performances at venues throughout Brooklyn saw him gain a weekly residency spot at St. Nick's Pub in Harlem, where his following began to grow. He recruited a band, and after years of extensive touring and promotion, recorded and released two albums with independent label Motema.
2010 debut Water received a nomination for Best Jazz Vocal Album at the Grammy Awards, while sophomore effort Be Good was nominated for Best Traditional R&B Performance. Although he was quickly gaining popularity in jazz circles, it wasn't until the release of the brilliant Liquid Spirit in 2013that Porter broke into the mainstream.
The jazzman's third album won him the 2014 Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album and garnering significant critical acclaim; securing his place as the leading jazz singer of his generation. Porter's incredible vocal control and mastery of tone have won praise across the board and led to a commercial success rarely seen for jazz artists, including a top ten position in the UK charts. His fourth album, Take Me to the Alley, was released in May 2016 and was rated as album of the week in The Guardian.
