An all-star cast

Goldilocks and the Three Bears is a major new pantomime based – albeit very loosely – on the fairy tale of the same name. In this version, a circus owned by Dame Betty Barnum is under threat and only she and her daughter Goldilocks can save the day. Then a trio of bears joins in, as well as a dastardly rival circus owner for the audience to boo. The show has an all-star cast that includes Julian Clary, one of the UK’s best-loved television presenters, renowned for his flamboyant costumes and personality, Nigel Havers, a versatile British actor who has starred in both serious drama and comedies, and Matt Baker, presenter of "Blue Peter" and "The One Show" for the BBC. Pantomime has a long history and has its roots in 16th and 17th Century musical theatre. The earliest forms were the Harlequinade, which featured a clown figure and involved a great deal of physical humour and slapstick.  Another root was the mummers plays, which were loud and coarse and included men playing both male and female roles. In the 19th Century, these shows melded into the traditional modern pantomime. There are stock characters, a clown, a young woman in search of love and often pursued by two or more suitors, a villain and, of course, the dame who is the mother figure, usually played by a man, while the romantic male hero is generally played by a woman.
