The history of the Flint Firebirds

The story of the team begins in 1990, with the Detroit Compuware Ambassadors entering the Ontario Hockey League and later undergoing a few name changes including the Junior Red Wings, the Whalers and, later, the Plymouth Whalers. In 2015 the team moved from Detroit to Flint and began playing their home matches at the Dort Federal Credit Union Event Center – a 4,000-seat stadium that also hosts concerts and boxing matches. Discussion around the name of the team returned once again: there was support in the city for resurrecting the Generals, a team that had previously played in Flint, while the Flint Tropics – the name of the fictional basketball team in the 2008 comedy "Semi-Pro" – was also a popular choice.
