Jeu a la nantaise
FC Nantes began life in 1943 through the merger of five smaller local football clubs. After turning professional, the team eventually achieved promotion to Ligue 1 in 1963 under the management of Jose Arribas, a pioneer of an attacking style of play based on technique, speed and intelligence. Nicknamed 'jeu a la Nantaise,' this approach paid dividends, helping FC Nantes to lift their very first Ligue 1 title in 1965, and then their second just a year later. Les Canaris won a further four championships over the next two decades before moving from the Stade Marcel Saupin to the 38,000-capacity Stade de la Beaujoire-Louis Fontenau in 1984. After managing to avoid relegation on a technicality in 1992, the club then also changed their name to FC Nantes Atlantique. The team won a further two Ligue 1 titles and two Coupe de France trophies under this incarnation, and also reached the semi-finals of the 1996 Champions League, before reverting to their more familiar moniker in 2007. FC Nantes - back in business
Having spent 40 consecutive seasons in the French top flight, FC Nantes suffered a major blow in 2007 when they were relegated to Ligue 2. The club spent the next half-decade yo-yoing between the two divisions, but since 2013, they have managed to maintain their Ligue 1 status. Expect FC Nantes to build on this progress with a mixture of youth and maturity that includes several internationals with World Cup experience under their belt. As well as watching a team in the process of restoring their former glories, fans with FC Nantes tickets should also look forward to seeing the by-products of a youth academy system that has previously spawned World Cup winners Didier Deschamps, Marcel Desailly and Christian Karembeu, local boy Jeremy Toulalan and Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Mickael Landrau, who, with 618 appearances, has played more Ligue 1 games than any other professional. FC Nantes tickets are available for both home games and away fixtures on StubHub.
