From the French Revolution to Zidane
The team simply known as Bordeaux originated from the sporting club founded by several French revolutionaries in 1881. After turning professional in 1936, the team relocated to the 1938 World Cup venue, Stade Chaban-Delmas, where they established themselves as a major force, winning the title in their very First Division season, as well as the Coupe de France. Bordeaux reached the final of the latter competition three times during the 1960s but enjoyed their most triumphant phase in the 1980s. Under iconic chairman Claude Bez, the team lifted three Ligue 1 championships and two Coupe de France titles, and they made it to the semi-finals of both the European Cup and Cup Winners' Cup. Bordeaux added to their trophy cabinet in the 1990s with another Ligue 1 title and the 1995 Intertoto Cup, a period in which they also counted World Cup winners Christophe Dugarry, Bixente Lizarazu and, of course, the legendary Zinedine Zidane among their line-up. New home, same competitive spirit
While arch rivals Toulouse and AS Nantes have repeatedly bounced around the divisions since the turn of the century, the far more consistent Bordeaux have continued to battle for silverware. They won the Coupe de la Ligue in 2002, reached the quarter-finals of Europe's second most prestigious cup in 2004, achieved their first ever league and cup double in 2009 and lifted the Coupe de France in 2013. With management from ex-Uruguay and Chelsea regular Gus Poyet and a captain such as Jaroslav Plasil, the Czech Republic midfielder with over a century of international caps to his name, the club remained as competitive as ever in 2018. Key names include French international goalkeeper Benoit Costil, the Senegalese pairing of Younousse Sankhare and Youssouf Sabaly and promising Serbians Milan Gajic and Vukasin Jovanovic. The club has also benefitted from their 2015 move to the Stade Matmut Atlantique, a 42,000-capactity purpose-built stadium, which has also staged several France internationals.
