Originally built for the Ibero-American Exposition that was held in Seville, it was completed in 1929. Years later it hosted the 1982 FIFA World Cup and was remodeled to increase its seating capacity. The UEFA Euro was held there, and teams that have played in this stadium include Portugal, England, Armenia and more. In 1998, the stadium was almost completely rebuilt; for a while after the rebuild, the stadium was called Estadio Manuel Ruiz de Lopera, after the then-owner of the club. When he left, the original name of Estadio Benito Villamarin was voted back by fans. Musical performers like Alejandro Sanz, Operaci—n Triunfo and Elton John have performed at the stadium as well.
