Erykah Badu biography
Born in Dallas, Texas back in the early 70s, as Erica Abi Wright, Erykah's calling to music actually came in the form of being a local DJ, freestyling with the likes of Roy Hargrove. Changing the styling of her name from Erica to Erykah at the age of 14, the second part Badu, actually came from her favourite jazz scat sound. Concentrating on music full-time after graduating Grambling State University, Badu took on a number of part-time jobs in order to support herself, including teaching drama and dance to children at the South Dallas Cultural Center. Releasing her debut album Baduizm in 1997, Badu's efforts saw her become critically successful overnight. Going certified three times platinum by the RIAA, and Gold in the UK, Erykah Badu's album featured such extraordinary songs as "On & On", "Otherside of the Game" and "Appletree".
Suffice to say, due to such critical acclaim Erykah Badu was nominated and awarded a number of impressive accolades, including Best R&B/Soul or Rap Song of the Year, Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, with Baduizm earning a Grammy Award of for Best R&B Album. Since then Erykah has gone from strength to strength, with 5 studio albums under her belt along with a couple of mixtapes. As for her extensive tours, Erykah's live performances is partly what makes her such a sought-after singer, with critics all quick to praise Erykah's lyrical depth.
Erykah Badu's other top songs
While there's little doubt that "On & On" stands as Erykah Badu's calling card, there's a plethora of tracks that has helped to cement Erykah as R&B royalty. Take for example "Apple Tree", which exemplifies Badu's talent in the neo-soul genre. With the opening lyric standing as "I'd like to dedicate this to all of the Creator's righteous children", the song's reference to bible story, Adam & Eve, mixed with Badu's sultry words is proof of Badu's ability to juxtapose and compliment seamlessly.
