He later moved to Nashville - affectionately known as 'Music City' - to pursue a career as a live performer, eventually bagging a lucrative record deal with Capitol Records. His debut album Sinners Like Me displayed an innovative brand of outlaw rock, spawning four songs that hit the Billboard Country chart including the Top 20 hit singles 'How 'Bout You' and 'Guys Like Me'.

He followed up this initial success with his sophomore album Carolina in 2009, a dedication to his home state. The record spawned further hits including his signature song 'Smoke a Little Smoke'. In the late 2000s, his success skyrocketed and emotive country rock singles like 'Hell on the Heart' soared into the Top 10. His third album Chief was his first number one hit in 2011, giving birth to chart-topping hits like 'Drink In My Hand'.
