Founded in Berlin in 1985, the band is one of the most well-known rock bands across the country and is arguably best known for being fronted by Sven Regener—an accomplished writer who has published books such as "Neue Vahr Süd", "Der kleine Bruder", and "Herr Lehmann", which was later adapted into a feature-length film with the English title "Berlin Blues". After performing in the underground scene of the German capital, the band released their first album in 1986, "Basically Sad", which attracted the interest of major record labels. Their second album—"Try To Be Mensch"—was released in 1987 to critical acclaim, being produced by American alternative music legend John Cale. Incorporating elements of 1980s rock music to their sound, the band are known for simple yet melancholic songs that allow the poetic value of the lyrics to be fully appreciated. Defining German rock music
Combining their signature new wave sound with a stronger alternative rock influence, the band continued to raise their status with releases such as ‘Freedom, Love & Happiness’ (1988), ‘The Ballad of Jimmy and Johnny’ (1989), and ‘Damals Hintern Mond’ (1991). The group went on to claim real mainstream success with their 1992 album ‘Weißes Papier’. Only the second album to be sung entirely in the German language, it was responsible for bringing a more left-field rock music sound as promoted by bands like Talking Heads and Fury in the Slaughterhouse to the German-speaking music world. The 1996 album ‘Die schönen Rosen’ could be seen as marking the end of a certain chapter in the band’s history as individual members took a break to focus on solo projects, however, they returned in 1999 with the album ‘Psycho’ and have since cemented their place as one of Germany’s most iconic bands.
