The underdogs make it big
Founded in 1912, EA Guingamp spent their first half-century in the French non-leagues before achieving promotion to Division 3 in 1976 under the Presidency of Noel Le Graet. The club then won a second consecutive promotion before turning professional in 1984. Six years later, they relocated to the Stade de Roudourou, a venue with a capacity 2.5 times the population of the Guingamp commune. The move appeared to pay off in the mid-'90s, when they gained promotion for the first time in their history, won the 1996 Intertoto Cup, made their European debut and finished runners-up in the Coupe de France. The same competition gave EA Guingamp their first major domestic silverware in 2009 when they beat rivals Rennes 2-1 in the final and then their second in 2014 when they defeated Stade Rennais 2-0. A year later, the club beat Greece's PAOK and Belarus' Dinamo Minsk to make the knockout phase of the Europa League. EA Guingamp tickets are available to both buy and sell on StubHub.
EA Guingamp's knack for talent spotting remains
Despite their relatively small stature, EA Guingamp have been a stepping stone for a whole host of future stars. Two-time African footballer of the year Didier Drogba, Arsenal captain Laurent Koscielny and World Cup winners Vincent Candela and Florent Malouda are just a few of the major players who got their start at the Stade de Roudourou. The club also proved to be a springboard for several Ligue 1 managers including Erick Mombaerts (Toulouse), Guy Lacombe (AS Monaco) and Francis Smerecki (AS Nancy), while Noel Le Graet went on to serve as the President of the French Football Federation. With several youth internationals in their current squad, such as midfielder Ludovic Blas and Lilian Thuram's son Marcus in their current squad, EA Guingamp's reputation for discovering emerging talent only looks set to continue. And having enjoyed their longest running stint in Ligue 1 since gaining promotion in 2013, the club are now proving that they're also a consistently strong team in their own right.
