Dream Theater - Progressive Heavy Metal Group Announce 2016 UK Tour

Boasting a guitarist widely hailed as one of metal's greatest ever, this progressive rock band are well known for their outstanding technical proficiency. 13th studio album The Astonishing is a concept LP charting the efforts of a group of rebels trying to overthrow an oppressive empire, it's a fantastically entertaining listen. The record marks a new story for the band, who see each album as a blank slate from which to reinvent themselves. The band's live shows are famed for their duration and tendency for improvisation, with diverse set lists tailored for each individual city. 2016 will see them kick off a European tour at the London Palladium, playing the new album in full. Dream Theater Biography - 13th Studio Album The Astonishing

Whilst studying at the Berklee College of Music, John Petrucci, John Myung and Mike Portnoy decided to form a band, initially producing covers of Rush and Iron Maiden songs under the name Majesty. Once Charlie Dominici joined as singer, they changed their name and began playing live in venues around New York, eventually to be signed by Mechanic Records. Their first album When Dream and Day Unite only saw limited success upon its release in 1989, and Dominici left the group to be replaced by Kevin James LaBrie of glam rock act Winter Rose. Leaving Mechanic behind, they signed with Atco Records and released Images and Words in 1992, which saw single 'Pull Me Under' gain significant radio play.

A number of line-up changes followed in the next few years before the band released progressive album Scenes from a Memory in 1999, their first truly conceptual piece. It followed the story of a young woman who was murdered in 1928 and the modern day man who is haunted by the tale. This was followed by three further progressive albums, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, Train of Thought and Octavarium, the first of which contained an opening track of 42 minutes in length. The band's highest chart entry would come in 2008 with Black Clouds and Silver Linings, debuting at number six in the Billboard charts and was praised for its brave lyricism and raw subject matter. Drummer Mike Portnoy left the band in 2010 to pursue new projects and was replaced by Mike Mangini after the remaining members held televised auditions on YouTube. Their next two album releases would also see chart success followed by a rigorous touring schedule that took the new material all over the world. For their 13th official release they returned to a conceptual style, creating a new website to house the characters that would appear throughout The Astonishing, including Gabriel, Evangeline, Emperor Nafaryus and Arhys.
