Variety is the spice of life
First opened in the year 1900, the Clapham Grand was a top venue for music hall performances and was named "The New Grand Theatre of Varieties". Sadly, as the years passed the need for variety halls diminished and the building fell into disrepair. It was eventually converted into a live music venue in 1989, but that was to be a short-lived affair and the unsuccessful enterprise was then utilised as a cinema and bingo hall. Following a high-profile campaign by the actors Corin and Vanessa Redgrave, it was restored to its former purpose as a variety theatre. Cinema showings still take place regularly, however, and are a very popular attraction at the Grand. Top musical acts have appeared in this fabulous theatre over the years, including the legendary Chuck Berry, The Temptations and The Kinks. In recent decades Siouxsie and the Banshees, Public Enemy, Jamiroquai and Echo and the Bunnymen have all graced the stage. For top seats to the best in live music and theatre productions, buy Clapham Grand tickets from StubHub.
More recently, chart-topping musicians have formed an impressive line-up of talent to tread these famous boards. Solo acts from the Girls Aloud vocalist Nadine Coyle, Jamie Cullum, Paul Weller and Brian May have all received critical acclaim at the venue. And that’s not forgetting energetic performances by the chart-topping bands Madness, Oasis, The Jam, Muse and Public Enemy! The Clapham Grand is not just a movie and live music venue, however - the variety aspect is thriving at the theatre. Clapham Grand audiences have enjoyed the unique performances of the Cirque du so Gay troupe (not to be confused with Quebec’s Cirque du Soleil) and American Idol’s simply magnificent drag artist Adore Delano. Real name Daniel Noriega, Adore has also appeared at top venues like The Ritz in Manchester, O2 Academy 2 Newcastle, Club Revenge in Brighton and O2 ABC Glasgow. With its capacity for standing and seated audiences of 1,250 and 500 respectively, you can be sure to experience an energised yet still intimate atmosphere in the hall.
