Chelsea Grin Brings Deathcore to the Masses

Deathcore is a genre that combines the harder aspects of both death metal and metalcore for a sound featuring screaming vocals, hard instrumentals and plenty of breaks for drum solos. Chelsea Grin rose from the deathcore scene in 2007 and became an instant success with charting singles, press acclaim and an ever-growing fan base.

Chelsea Grin plays lengthy tours with stops all across North America and Europe. The European leg of their tour begins in Switzerland before moving on to Germany, the Netherlands, and Poland. Catch them at their UK stops in Brighton, Manchester, Glasgow, Birmingham, Cardiff, and London. They'll wrap up their tour with another leg on the continent, hitting Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, and Hungary before wrapping up with one last stop in Karlsruhe, Germany.

Most deathcore bands shirk that genre label in favour of either death metal or hardcore. Chelsea Grin takes pride in the label and even self-references the deathcore name. This makes the band seem more approachable as deathcore fans often feel marginalised by musicians who feel embarrassed by that label.

Band

Chelsea Grin formed in 2007 in Salt Lake City, Utah, under the original name Ahaziah. The lineup included lead singer Alex Koehler, Chris Kilbourn and Michael Stafford on guitars, Austin Marticorena on bass and Andrew Carlston on drums. The band played live shows at any venue that would take them, signed with a small record label and released a self-titled EP. That EP didn't make waves in the industry but did spark interest in Chelsea Grin.

Chelsea Grin's lineup has changed over the years, with original members bouncing in and out after interpersonal conflicts. Lead singer Koehler has remained through it all and the Grin sound has remained cohesive even through its evolution.

Breakthrough

Chelsea Grin's first full-length album Desolation of Eden had label support and the credentials of producer, and As I Lay Dying vocalist, Tim Lambesis to support its launch. The album reached #21 on the US Heatseekers chart and received glowing reviews from Allmusic and Alternative Press. Singles "Sonnet of the Wretched" and "Recreant" received heavy radio play on metal stations and had music videos produced. The success led to touring with genre stars like Eyes Set to Kill and Vanna.

Hit Albums

Eden was followed by an EP, then 2011's My Damnation, which charted #64 on the Billboard 200, #6 on the Hard Rock chart and #9 on Heatseekers. Though commercially successful, the album received mixed reviews with three stars from Allmusic, and two from both Kerrang! and Alternative Press.

Ashes to Ashes, released in 2014, was the band's most successful album to that point. Chart positions included #27 on Billboard 200, #3 on Independent Albums, #4 on Hard Rock Albums and #8 on Rock albums. The number of charts speaks to the genre-crossing appeal of Chelsea Grin.
