The BMW Championship is the second of three events in the PGA Tour Playoffs — which is the culmination of the season-long quest for the FedExCup. Originally known as the Western Open for most of its history, it is one of the oldest professional golf tournaments in the world. In 2007, the tournament was renamed to the BMW Championship and folded into the season-ending FedExCup playoffs system. The tournament is played at various golf courses around the country every year, but the most common location is Chicago and its surrounding suburbs. The BMW Championship was named the PGA’s Tournament of the Year in 2008, 2012, 2013 and 2014. Past winners of the tournament have included many golf legends: Byron Nelson, Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Ben Crenshaw and Tiger Woods, who won it on five separate occasions. Since the 2007 reorganization, it has been won by Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas and Woods. What is the schedule for the latest BMW Championship?

The BMW Championship schedule is set for August 18-23, 2020. On the Tuesday and Wednesday before the start of the official tournament, attendees can attend the practice rounds and pro-am events. The tournament officially begins on Thursday, the 20th, and concludes on Sunday, the 23rd. A more complete schedule should be announced closer to the start of the tournament.

Who participates in the BMW Championship?

The BMW Championship features the top professional golfers. However, the golfers must earn their way into the tournament by making the FedExCup Playoffs. A total of 125 players enter the playoffs based on their place in the FedExCup standing, which is contingent on performing well in regular season tournaments. After the first playoff event, the Northern Trust, the field is reduced to 70 for the BMW Championship. Due to the limited number of players, the BMW Championship does not have a cut. All players will be eligible to finish the event through the weekend. If a player drops out, no alternates will be added. After the conclusion of the tournament, the field is cut further to 30 for the final event, the TOUR Championship. The eventual champion is determined by a combination of factors, including the player’s score at the TOUR Championship and their overall FedExCup rankings.
