Billy Joel: from Piano Man to Grammy Award winning soft rock hero
Born in the Bronx, New York, William Martin Joel reluctantly learnt to play the piano as a young child at the request of his mother. To support his family, he would perform in bars during the week, but the decreased focus on his studies would have a detrimental effect on his grades at school.
However, instead of attending summer school to earn his diploma, he decided to pursue a career in music, inspired by the likes of The Beatles. He played in various bands, including The Echoes and The Hassles, until he signed as a solo artist with Family Productions in 1970, recording first album Cold Spring Harbor. Early success saw him leave the label to sign with Columbia Records, and his next LP was the 1973 effort Piano Man, from which the title track became his signature piece. Next record Streetlife Serenade was also defined by one of its singles, with "The Entertainer" an amusingly sarcastic response to his critics.
The hits kept on coming with experimental album The Nylon Curtain and '50s homage An Innocent Man, which spawned the number one hit "Tell Her About It! in 1983. "Uptown Girl" would become a chart hit the same year, with its iconic video starring the singer's future wife Christie Brinkley.
Billy Joel: huge Wembley show to be followed up by giant 2018 Manchester date
By 1994 he was touring alongside Elton John in a series of 'Face to Face' gigs that would continue until 2009 and become the most successful concert tandem in music history. "To Make You Feel My Love" was released in 1997 along with a third edition of his greatest hits, and it wasn't long until the musical superstar was awarded his place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for his achievements in the industry.
His most recent original record material came in 2001 with Fantasies and Delusions, an arrangement of classical piano compositions, and in the years since he has headed out on a number of tours, playing his extensive back catalogue live across the world. In 2016, he made his first appearance at London's Wembley Stadium for a sellout show that had fans on their feet.
