His album Life's a Riot with Spy vs Spy became a hit on the airwaves, paving the way for a record contract with Virgin Records. In the 1980s, the Barking boy became one of the most popular artists in the UK with a huge cult fan base spanning the country.

He has shared the stage with some of the most important music artists in history, including The Clash at the epochal Rock Against Racism festival in 1978 and his many albums have continued to influence modern artists.
