Bianca Del Rio: Drag queen superstar
Born Roy Haylock, his flair for design and costumes were recognised in 1993, when he was only 17, winning a Big Easy Entertainment Award for Best Costume Design for Snow Queen. Since then he has earned a further 13 Big Easy Entertainment Awards, winning six of the said 13. As for Bianca Del Ria, Haylock began performing as Bianca Del Rio, when he turned 20 winning the New Orleans Gay Entertainer of the Year for 3 years running. In regards to the origin of Del Rio's name, with Haylock coming from Cuban and Honduran descent, in an interview, Del Rio explained "My friend was like, 'You need a name.' She said, 'You remind me of this friend I used to have named Bianca." And I said okay. Then Del Rio came out of nowhere. I think it was just a good way to explain my eyebrows, because I am Spanish."
For those unaware of RuPaul's Drag Race, the TV show is an annual reality competition that pits contestants against each other with various challenges, to help decide who will be "America's next drag superstar". Critic's all agree that Del Rio's victory in the 6th series proved well deserved and the talented comic has since gone on to become a household name, not just in the LGBT community, but the world over.
Bianca Del Rio's silver screen debut
Releasing in 2016, Hurricane Bianca stood as Bianca del Rio's debut movie. Crowd-funded via Indiegogo, the low-budget comedy saw Bianca Del Rio take her witty comebacks to as small town in Texas. Centering on a down-and-out science teacher, played by Haylock, transferred to Texas and promptly fired once his sexual orientation is discovered, Haylock returns to the town as a new teacher, Bianco Del Rio simultaneously causing havoc within the town, yet excelling at teaching her students. While the film was criticised for its slightly disjointed storytelling, Hurricane Bianca's overall light humour struck a chord with critics and Del Rio fans all over the world.
