A pitch perfect musical
Born Carole Joan Klein in 1942 to a Jewish school teacher and firefighter in Manhattan, King was introduced to music primarily by her mother. She showed a particular interest in the piano and displayed a natural sense of absolute pitch. The ability to identify and re-create any musical note without a reference point, absolute or perfect pitch is a rare phenomenon, and it pleased her parents greatly! In high-school, King was friends with legendary icon Paul Simon. They wrote songs and recorded demos together before heading off to college, where King met Gerry Gofin, whom she would marry at the age of seventeen. The pair also became writing partners. With Gofin penning the lyrics and King composing the music, they became an undeniable recipe for success. After their hit with The Shirelles, which became the first ever number one hit performed by a black girl group, Gofin and King went on to write for the likes of The Monkees, Aretha Franklin and The Drifters. Join audiences worldwide in celebrating this prodigal talent's life and work. Classic hits live on stage
After eight years of marriage, King and Gofin divorced. In turn, their writing partnership dissolved, and King decided this was the time to set sail on her own. Numerous struggles followed, but she continued to forge her own path as a performing artist in her own right. International acclaim came upon the release of her classic 1971 album Tapestry, which earned four Grammy awards and is considered in the top 50 best albums of all time, alongside The Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan. Beautiful, written by Douglas McGrath, earned magnificent critical acclaim in its first year on Broadway, as well as a Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Musical for Jesse Mueller's performance as Carole King.
