Paul Fox, editor of the magazine show Sportsview, conceived the idea for this dazzling sporting award ceremony in 1954 to honour the sports person whose 'actions most captured the public's imagination'. The ceremony was held at the beautiful Savoy hotel in London and lasted just 45 minutes, with long distance runner Christopher Chataway crowned the winner. Every year since conception, this brilliant display of sporting achievement has grown to become more prestigious. Now, the ceremony includes several other awards besides its titular prize, including honours for 'Overseas Sports Personality of the Year', 'Young Sports Personality of the Year' and a special 'Unsung Hero' award.
