Experience the magic of the world's largest and most celebrated classical music festival. The BBC Proms is an eight-week summer season of concerts that has been a beloved British cultural institution for over a century. Held predominantly in London's magnificent Royal Albert Hall, the Proms offers an unparalleled live music experience, welcoming seasoned concert-goers and newcomers alike to enjoy performances from the world's greatest orchestras, conductors, and soloists.
Since its inception in 1895, the festival's core mission, envisioned by founder Sir Henry Wood, has been to make the best of classical music accessible to the widest possible audience. This democratic spirit is the heart of the Proms and is most famously embodied in the tradition of "Promming" — standing in the arena or gallery of the Royal Albert Hall for a uniquely immersive and affordable concert experience. This tradition creates an informal and enthusiastic atmosphere that is truly unique to the Proms.
A Festival of Musical Discovery
The Proms is a true celebration of music in all its forms. While rooted in the classical tradition, the festival's programme is renowned for its incredible breadth and diversity. Each season features a thrilling mix of symphonic masterpieces, intimate chamber music, grand choral works, and spectacular operas. The festival also embraces a wide array of other genres, including film scores, jazz, and contemporary pop, ensuring there is something for every music lover to discover.
This commitment to variety is on full display in the upcoming season. Audiences can look forward to timeless classics such as Dvořák’s ‘New World’ Symphony and a performance of Martha Argerich Plays Beethoven. The season also showcases exciting contemporary collaborations, including a much-anticipated performance from Weyes Blood and the Jules Buckley Orchestra. This eclectic mix is what makes the Proms a vibrant and constantly evolving festival.
The Unforgettable Last Night of the Proms
The season culminates in one of the most famous musical events in the world: the Last Night of the Proms. This grand finale is a joyous and exuberant celebration, unlike any other classical concert. The first half of the evening features a programme of world-class music, while the second half transforms into a magnificent party, complete with flag-waving and passionate audience singalongs to patriotic British anthems like "Rule, Britannia!" and "Land of Hope and Glory". Securing a ticket to the Last Night of the Proms is to witness a truly iconic cultural moment, broadcast to millions globally.
