Barry Manilow Biography
After studying at the New York College of Music and Juilliard, aspiring singer Barry Pincus began his career composing commercial jingles and scores for off-Broadway musical productions. Adopting his mother's maiden name for his professional life, an association with Bette Midler quickly helped boost his profile. Working both as her producer and musical director, their professional relationship lasted for four years, before his own career took off. He broke out to record original material and released two eponymous albums filled with catchy pop melodies - the latter of which contained breakthrough single 'Mandy'. Throughout the '70s and early '80s he enjoyed hit after hit from multi-platinum-selling albums Tryin' to Get This Feeling, This One's For You, Even Now and One Voice. Even Now crossed the Atlantic and found great success in the UK thanks to iconic singles "Copacabana (At the Copa)" and "Can't Smile Without You".
Manilow's popularity continued to grow into the '80s, and he enjoyed sold out shows at London's Royal Albert Hall and Wembley Arena after the release of Barry and If I Should Love Again. By the end of the decade, he was back in the US, taking up residency at the Gershwin Theatre for a series of performances. Despite the ever-changing musical landscape, the singer still found a loyal audience to his work, and launched Copacabana in 1994, a West End musical based on his extensive back catalogue. He remained a chart fixture thanks to compilation records such as The Greatest Songs of the Fifties, which became the singer's first number one in the Billboard charts for 29 years, and was followed in 2006 by a similarly successful sequel. Today, he continues to delight audiences all over the world with energetic and passionate live performances, and with a new album in tow, it's looking like there's no stopping the incredible singer.
