Barnsley FC, or "The Reds" as they are nicknamed, was established in 1887 as Barnsley St Peter's. Their founder was the Reverend Tiverton Preedy, who was a clergyman remembered for his work with the poor in both Yorkshire and London. He had a keen interest in sport and founded a number of clubs and societies. Barnsley St Peter’s was originally a church football team that played in regional leagues before joining the Football League in 1898. They made it to the second division where they stayed for 80 years, the longest time for which any club has remained in that division. A nursery for future stars

Barnsley FC have nurtured and sold many players who became stars with other clubs, including Tommy Taylor who, in 1951, was sold to Manchester United. Sadly he was among the fatalities in the Munich Air Disaster. Danny Blanchflower, who ended up with Tottenham Hotspur, was another Barnsley FC prodigy. Barnsley FC fans consider their main rivals to be Leeds United, Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday. In 1912 Barnsley FC won the FA Cup when they beat West Bromwich Albion 1-0. In the 2007 to 2008 season, Barnsley FC completed another historic FA Cup run and along the way beat Premier League giants Liverpool FC at Anfield. Unfortunately they didn’t make it all the way, but it was still a huge achievement. The team has maintained their place in the Second Division and achieved a Football League Trophy in 2016.
