Growing up in Harlem - a district of New York known for birthing hip-hop superstars - this fledgling artist initially entered the spotlight via musical theatre. Training at the LaGuardia High School of Performing Arts, she secured roles in numerous off-Broadway productions before quitting her education to pursue a recording career. Releasing her first material in 2009 under the name Miss Bank$, she was soon attracting the attention of XL Records before moving to major imprint Interscope.

A cover of NY indie-rock outfit Interpol's 'Slow Hands' uploaded to her YouTube account soon confirmed her crossover appeal, something she further underlined by playing the opening slot on the normally rock-orientated NME Awards Tour. However, it was the September 2011 release of her debut single '212' that truly turned heads, with online buzz around its uncompromising lyrics and stylish video steadily growing through late 2011 and 2012.
