Singer
After a turbulent childhood in New Orleans, Alsina moved to Texas with his mother to make a new start as a teen. As his interest in music grew, he began making videos for his Youtube channel, covering songs by artists including Drake, Lyfe Jennings, and Lil Wayne. These clips quickly went viral, gaining thousands of views. Things turned sour when a friend was killed and tensions at home led him to return to New Orleans. The death of his brother inspired Alsina to return to music, and pursue his ambitions with more zeal than ever before.August Alsina is best known for his collaboration with Trinidad James on "I Luv This S**t." This 2013 single, produced by Knucklehead, reached No. 4 on the US R&B Chart. The gritty song was nominated for a BET Award for Best Collaboration and won the Coca-Cola Viewers Choice Award. That same year, Alsina also collaborated with Kidd Kidd on "Downtown" and Rich Homie Quan on "Ghetto."
Breakthrough
After moving to Atlanta in 2011, Alsina began working with DJ Scream on his debut mix tape. The Product was released in 2012 and caught plenty of attention online and on the radio. It led to the release of the single "Sucka" featuring Lloyd. Alsina worked with Greg Street, Wild Wayne, and DJ Drama to produce other mix tapes in 2012 and 2013. At this point, Alsina's fame was building, and MTV named him one of its 2013 Fab 5 hip hop artists. His 2013 EP and 2014 album did well with fans and critics, and August Alsina won the BET Award for Best New Artist in 2014.
Hit Albums
Alsina released his 8 track EP Downtown: Life Under the Gun in 2013. It reached number 68 in the US Billboard Top 200, and the singles "Ghetto" and "I Love This S**t" did well on the US R&B charts. In 2014 Alsina released his first full-length studio album Testimony. It reached the No. 1 position in the US R&B/Hip Hop Album Chart, and No. 10 in the UK R&B Album chart. The album is grittier than the usual R&B release; it reflects on themes of sex and drugs, Alsina's troubled past, and triumphant present. According to the New York Times, the album is "different from most R&B in one crucial way: it's preoccupied not with love and conquest, but with despair and perseverance."
