When Atreyu broke up in 2011, their legions of loyal fans were left in a state of bewilderment and disarray. A favourite in the metalcore scene, the absence of Atreyu's hard-hitting style and awesome instrumentation left a vacuum in metal music that has never been filled. However, there need not be any successors to the much-beloved band: in 2014 Atreyu reunited and began working on new music, heralding the triumphant return of metal's favourite and prodigal sons.

Schedule

Those who want Atreyu tickets need only look online, and they'll see that the band is very likely coming to a venue near them. The group has played all over America at venues ranging from South Side Music Hall in San Antonio to the Gothic Theatre in Englewood, CO. They've also come to Europe to play at the Motorpoint Arena Cardiff, the Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham and even the De Vlessenhoeve in Belgium. Their paths have also crossed with venues in the land "Down Under," where they played at Olympic Park in Sydney and The Factory Theatre in Marrickville.

Trivia

Atreyu didn't start out with the name that their fans have come to love and that has made them famous. In fact, they began their musical career under the name of Retribution. They would soon find out, though, that another band was already performing under that name. Once they discovered this, the group took their name from a character in the popular book The Neverending Story.

Band/Singer

In 1998, the band that would later be known as Atreyu started out as a four-piece consisting of Alex Varkatzas on vocals, Dan Jacobs on lead guitar, Brian O'Donnell on bass and Brandon Saller on drums. They would eventually sign on with Victory Records, where they released their debut full-length album Suicide Notes and Butterfly Kisses. By this time, they had brought on Travis Miguel on rhythm guitar, and the band made its final ensemble change with Mark McKnight, who would replace Christ Thompson as the fourth and final bassist. The remaining five-piece then released several albums, including the very popular Lead Sails Paper Anchor, before going their own ways in 2011. Fortunately for fans, the same five-piece returned in 2014 and announced they were creating a new album.

Breakthrough

In 2002, Suicide Notes and Butterfly Kisses gained Atreyu considerable attention. Their single "Lip Gloss and Black" was featured on Uranium and Headbangers Ball in 2003. Their real breakthrough, though, can be said to be the release of The Curse in 2004. It closed in on nearly half a million units sold, and by the time it started descending on the charts, it had already reached No. 32 on the US Billboard. In addition, it reached No. 1 on the US Independent Albums chart, and new fans were introduced to the group through the release of "The Crimson" and "Right Side of the Bed" on MTV2 and other music networks.

Hit Albums

The Curse wasn't Atreyu's only taste of success. Their 2006 release, A Death-Grip on Yesterday, made it to No. 9 on the album charts, and only one year later, Lead Sails Paper Anchor would climb to No. 8. Although Death-Grip had leaked online long before its official release, it still sold over 69,000 copies in its first week. Lead Sails showed the band move away from their metalcore roots, and while this resulted in lower ratings from some critics, fans still flocked toward the album.

Show Experience

An Atreyu show essentially breaks down into a hard rock party, with adrenaline emanating from both sides of the stage barriers. The band members go hardcore the entire time, and there are even moments when, while holding their instruments, they'll do barrel rolls and other antics across the stage. Fans, on the other hand, almost immediately start moshing in the crowd - at outdoor festivals, it's not uncommon for people to have crowdsurfers dropped on their heads. Beach balls are flying through the air through all of this, so an Atreyu show is literally as close as one can get to a party without actually going to one.
