Historical retrospective of Spain's biggest music festival

The Cranberries was one of the internationally popular musical acts that helped to kick off the original Arenal Sound festival in 2010 and world-renowned electronic dance music (EDT) master DJ Armin van Buuren added a solid punch to the festivities that played out on El Arenal beach during that summer. One year later, Calvin Harris and Scissor Sisters were part of the line-up that played to over 160, 000 'sounders' over the duration of the festival, and by 2013, Arenal Sound proclaimed itself the biggest music festival in Spain, drawing close to 300,000 patrons over four days. Steve Aoki, Kaiser Chiefs and Clean Bandit are some of the headline acts from editions past. 2014 marked the fifth anniversary of the weeklong festival and partygoers were treated to the musical sensations of acts like Placebo, Love of Lesbian and Russian Red, and the 2015 edition was memorable because torrential rains ruined a full two days of the festival…but it still managed to draw over a half million ravers. Arenal Sound: festival information and other trivia

Arenal Sound is an open air music festival with four stages: Negrita, Desperados, Thunder Bitch (beach club) and the Inside Pool Stage. Thunder Bitch is actually on El Arenal beach, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, and the first two days are usually the 'pre-party' warmup to the heavy acts that follow as the event builds up to its Sunday finale. The town of Burriana that plays host is a commune, which lends itself perfectly for this type of affair, and its beach locale has been a major part of its success over the years. There is a 'Glamping Ground', which is popular parlance for a glamorous camping area where access tickets are in extremely high demand and if it's sold out, 'sounders' will have to make do with more conventional lodging. Various food and beverage concession stands can be found at the festival and there is a supermarket close by if you prefer to prepare your own meals.
