Amy Helm's American musical roots run deep
The daughter of famous musical parents, Amy Helm was born in Woodstock, New York, in 1970 and studied jazz music while in high school before turning her attentions towards blues and gospel a few years later after listening to her father's work with noted rock group The Band. Helm's first taste of recording music came when she was invited by her stepfather Donald Fagen of Steely Dan to sing back-up vocals on the band's seminal "Kamakiriad" album in 1993. After joining the group Ollabelle 2002, her father Levon Helm played drums on the band's self-titled debut album in 2004 and it was the first of several collaborations between father and daughter. Amy Helm also went on to partner with other country/folk musicians such as Laura Cantrell, Chris Smither and The Holmes Brothers to name a few. Levon and Amy Helm collaborated to bring to life the Midnight Ramble series of concerts that were held in Woodstock and drew noted artists such as Emmylou Harris and Elvis Costello. Solo success and the Handsome Strangers
After several years of recording and touring with her father, Levon Helm died in 2012 - but not before he won two Grammy Awards for his last two albums - while Amy kept the Midnight Ramble concerts going at the same time as recording new material with both the Ramble and Ollabelle. A new band, Amy Helm & the Handsome Strangers, was formed soon after and her eagerly awaited debut "Didn't It Rain", featuring tracks "Rescue Me" and "Deep Water", was released to rave reviews. This veteran of the stage has sung background vocals and featured as an instrumentalist on a long list of songs, but there's nothing quite like performing your own material live in concert. Helm toured extensively for two years before taking a break to record her second studio album, "This Too Shall Light" in 2017, which included renditions of "Michigan" and "Freedom of the Stallion". A consummate professional, Amy Helm's voice is rich and soulful, and its quality is unmistakable whether she sings folk, gospel or blues.
