Amadou and Mariam are a musical duo from Bamako, Mali, who mix traditional Malian sounds with modern guitar, rock and blues music. Amadou's full name is Amadou Bagayoko, wheras Mariam's is Mariam Doumbia. The duo have played together since the 1980s and have experienced global success, winning a Grammy award for "Best Contemporary World Music Album" and playing at major festivals like Coachella and All Tomorrow's Parties. They have collaborated with numerous major musicians and bands, from U2 to Damon Albarn. Amadou and Mariam have released 8 albums and published a joint autobiography about their music, life and travels. In 2011, they were appointed ambassadors to the World Food Programme, for which they make regular appearances in support of its cause.
Amadou and Mariam's background
Amadou and Mariam met while attending Mali's Institute for the Young Blind. Each had lost their vision in their youth. They performed together in the Institute's Eclipse Orchestra and later married in 1980. Amadou and Mariam produced a number of cassette recordings while living in several of West Africa's major cities, and they soon began to tour at local and regional festivals. In 1996, the duo moved to Paris and signed to Polygram's Emarcy label, for which they produced the album Sou Ni Tile and witnessed their first major hit, "Je pense Ã toi." They went on to produce additional albums and collaborate with a number of major artists like Coldplay, Damon Albarn and K'Naan.

The song "Je pense Ã toi" was Amadou and Mariam's first major hit, selling more than 100,000 copies. The duo's song "Sabali" was featured at No. 15 on Pitchfork Media's list of the Top 100 Best Tracks of 2008. "Sabali" was the most frequently played French song around the world that year.
Amadou and Mariam's notable awards
In 2008, Amadou and Mariam won a Grammy for "Best Contemporary World Music Album" for their album Welcome to Mali. In 2009, the duo won the Best Group category in the UK's Songlines Music Awards. They won BBC Radio 3 awards for Best Album and World Music, for their album Dimanche Ã Bamako.
Amadou and Mariam's biggest concerts
In 2007, Amadou and Mariam performed at Glastonbury as part of Damon Albarn's Africa Express project. Amadou and Mariam were selected to support U2 in Cape Town and Johannesburg on their U2360 tour. In addition, the duo performed a series of concerts in the dark, which they called Eclipse, in the cities of Paris, Manchester and London.
