Formation and surge of success in Asia
The band consisting of Londoners Paul Marazzi, Ben Adams and Mark Read and Norwegian Christian Ingebrigsten came together after Marazzi failed to make the cut for the pop group Steps. Marazzi later met with Steps co-founder Tim Byrne to speak about the formation of a second group and auditions were soon held, during which Adams, Read and Ingebrigsten were welcomed with open arms. Under the management of Byrne, the boys signed a record deal with Colombia Records in 1999 and released their first single, "Be the First to Believe", in the summer of that very same year. Two number one hits – "Take On Me" and "Same Old Brand New You" – followed in 2000 and the group saw an enormous fan base develop in Asia, where they embarked on a huge arena tour soon after. They also saw great success in Norway and the UK, winning a BRIT Award in 2001 for "British Breakthrough Act". After the release of their third album, "Make It Good", Marazzi departed from the band and A1 subsequently broke up. But all these years later, they’re back together! Solo success and comeback announcement
When the band split, its members went their separate ways for a number of years: Adams fired up a solo career and gained popularity as a contestant on "Celebrity Big Brother", Ingebrigsten enjoyed solo success in Norway before moving into other areas of entertainment, and Read became a prominent songwriter, working with acts such as Boyzone, Charlotte Church and Michael Bolton. In 2009 A1 announced they would be reforming as a trio (without Marazzi) and released a string of successful singles, one of which they would perform as representatives of Norway in the Eurovision Song Contest. A1 announced a reunion with Marazzi ahead of their 20th anniversary, for which they would play various shows in Asia and the UK.
