A-ha Biography
Morten Harket, Pal Waaktaar-Savoy and Magne Furuholmen moved to London in 1982 in order to pursue a career in music. After struggling initially, persistence paid off and one of their demos was picked up by Warner Brothers. 'Take On Me' fast became a hit across the globe, including a ground-breaking video that is often considered one of the greatest ever made - regularly voted alongside Michael Jackson's "Thriller" in lists of the best. Proving particularly popular in the UK, debut album Hunting High and Low shot to the top of the charts and achieved triple platinum status.
The band saw similar success with their following albums, Scoundrel Days and Stay on These Roads, with the latter including the theme song to James Bond film The Living Daylights. They then went on to break a world record, drawing in a crowd of 198,000 for their performance at the Rock in Rio II Festival in 1991. However, the band decided to go on hiatus at the height of their fame after releasing album Memorial Beach in 1993, with the members going their separate ways in order to focus on solo projects. They reunited at the turn of the millennium, and albums Minor Earth, Major Sky, Lifelines and Analogue also achieved high chart placements. They returned to their original synth-pop sounds in 2009 with Foot of the Mountain, reasserting their place in modern music with some great festival appearances. They elected to take another break in 2010, before announcing their return to mark 30 years in the industry in 2015 with their album Cast in Steel, with a UK-wide arena tour following soon after.
