Zemfira - Breaking the mould
A far cry from the usual Russian radio stars, Ramazanova drew her early musical influences of Black Sabbath and Queen from her older brother. Finishing music school at 22, she recruited a band to record with her, and her powerful vocals turned heads after an early demo tape reached a number of producers. Ramazanova and her group were soon signed and in the studio, becoming an instant hit with the public, who were unused to seeing a woman in a rock band.
Their songs pack the vocal power of Shakira with the nuanced riffs of Muse, culminating in a refreshing style completely different from either. The band's singer is notoriously private, preferring to restrict her public appearances to the stage. Despite constant plays on the airwaves and international fame, she resists the temptation to become a more formulaic pop star, staying true to the music that shaped her original sound. In her own words, "true rock does not provide millions of dollars."
