The heritage of the Turkey National Soccer Team
Turkey’s first ever football match was an unofficial friendly against the Romania National Soccer Team, which ended in a draw. The team made its first official debut in a match against the then Czechoslovakia at the 1924 Games, which the Turks lost quite convincingly, but laid the groundwork for future success. Since then, the country has participated at the highest levels in Europe and in other regional competitions, and made several appearances in the world championship. Turkey also scored the fastest goal in world championship history at the time against the South Korea National Soccer Team in 2002. The team has longstanding sporting rivalries with both Croatia and the Greece National Soccer Team. They’ve met the former in major play-offs many times, with results fairly evenly split between them. They’ve fared better against Greece, having won the majority of encounters in what’s often called one of the fiercest rivalries in international football.
