Tor Miller is New York's new troubadour, a young singer with talent and emotional depth beyond his years.
Tor Miller's live schedule includes a mix of headline shows and festival appearances. He will be performing around Europe, the US, and Canada in the coming months. In the UK, he has dates coming up at The Castle Hotel in Manchester and Birthdays in London. He will also be playing some of the top British music festivals, including The Great Escape in Brighton, Liverpool Sound City, Suffolk's Latitude Festival, and London's inaugural Citadel Festival.
Tor Miller may be increasingly known as an indie-pop singer-songwriter, but his career could have been quite different. When he was in high school, he started a pop-punk band, and the first album he bought for himself was by the New York rock band, Vampire Weekend. However, his mother introduced him to some of the classic singer-songwriters, such as Elton John and David Bowie, who undoubtedly inspired the music we hear from Tor Miller today.
As a teenager, Tor learned to play the piano and write songs from a local teacher in New Jersey, where he grew up. After finishing school, he moved to New York to study at NYU in the Clive Davis School of Music, but he cared too much about performing live to put it on the back-burner. While at university, he had a residency at the Rockwood Music Hall, and also played regularly at a burlesque bar called The Slipper Room. These gigs and the songs he uploaded online started to catch the attention of the music industry, and he was signed to a record deal with Glassnote Records, the home of popular and well-respected acts such as Mumford & Sons, Phoenix, and Chvrches.
While his early recordings had impressed the music industry and online taste makers, it was the track "Midnight" which got the most attention from the press and music fans when it premiered in 2015. The song was chosen as the Hottest Record In The World by Zane Lowe on his Radio 1 show. Critics were impressed by Tor's ability to stand out among an onslaught of male singer-songwriters. The Guardian's Paul Lester wrote, "Midnight achieves what generations of aspirant songwriters have dreamed of doing: it poeticises the New York city streets."
Tor Miller is yet to release his debut album, but has achieved critical acclaim for his first EP, Headlights. Released in February 2015 via indie label Glassnote Records, it included four songs: "Midnight," "Hold The Phone," "Now and Again," and the title track, "Headlights." Speaking about the EP, which was recorded in a studio in London, Tor said, "Everything is picked from my life and the people around me."
