2020 Games in Tokyo: Ceremonies – the rituals
The Games ceremonies comprise of the Opening Ceremony and Closing Ceremony. Each is packed with its own traditions and performances, some of which date back to the Ancient Games held from 776 BC to ca. 393 AD. The Opening Ceremonies signal the commencement of the games and showcase some of the most extravagant, show-stopping artistic performances in the world. The Parade of Nations starts off the traditional part of the ceremony, with participating athletes marching into the stadium country by country. Following this is the official declaration of the opening of the Games, made by the host country’s head of state, and the hoisting of the flag. Then the most famous of all - the Olympic Flame! The torch is passed in a relay until it reaches the cauldron, which must be lit under the watchful eyes of the witnesses in the audience. Finally, a symbolic release of the doves occurs in honour of the tradition started at the 1920 Games after World War I. After the Games, a medal ceremony is held where medals are presented and winners celebrated. The Closing Ceremony is much shorter but also includes an artistic program, the Parade of Flags, final medal ceremony, thanking of the volunteers, the introduction of the next host nation and, finally, the extinguishing of the flame, bringing yet another Games to a close.
