TINA - The Tina Turner Musical London Tickets
Tina Turner the Musical at London's Aldwych Theatre in 2018
Twelve Grammy Awards; a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame; "Legend" and "Outstanding Contribution to Music" awards; a Guinness World Record for the most tickets sold by a solo performer ever; and combined album and singles sales of over 100 million worldwide (making her one of the best-selling of all time) – few artists in the history of music have experienced anything close to the success of Tina Turner.
Begging her career in the late-1950s as a singer with Ike Turner's Kings of Rhythm, Anna Mae Bullock was first introduced as Tina Turner in 1960 as a member of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue. Marrying Ike Turner in 1962, Tina and her husband released a string of hits, including "A Fool in Love", "River Deep – Mountain High", "Proud Mary", and "Nutbush City Limits" before their split – both as a couple and a musical endeavor – in 1976.
After her divorce from Ike in 1978, Tina Turner rebuilt her career with a series of high-energy and powerful live performances, before launching a major comeback in the 1980s with hits such as "Let's Stay Together" and "Help!". Turner then released her fifth solo album Private Dancer in 1984 to worldwide critical and commercial acclaim. The album, which contained Turner's biggest hit "What's Love Got to Do with It", won four Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year. Her solo success continued throughout the 1980s and 90s with multi-platinum albums including Break Every Rule and Foreign Affair, and with singles such as "We Don't Need Another Hero (Thunderdome)", "The Best" and "I Don't Wanna Fight".
Tina Turner the Musical: honouring a legend
Given her extraordinary life and long career, it remains a mystery as to why it has taken so long for Tina Turner's story to be told on stage. However, that will be put right in 2018 as TINA - The Tina Turner Musical begins what will undoubtedly be a long and successful run at London's Aldwych Theatre. Written by Olivier Award-winning playwright Katori Hall with Frank Ketelaar and Kees Prins, directed by Phyllida Lloyd (who oversaw the world premiere of Mamma Mia), and choreography by Anthony van Laast (Sister Act, Hair, Beauty and the Beast), it is sure to be a spectacular performance.
Although initially reluctant to give the show her blessing, Tina Turner was eventually persuaded after producers flew to her home in Switzerland to talk through their plans. Turner said: "I am so excited to be bringing my musical to the West End! London is a place that means so much to me and had such a big impact on my music and my life. Returning now to tell my full story, in the city I love, feels like an important chapter and is truly exciting."
