Growing up in Northwich in Cheshire, this legendary artist first made his name as the frontman of Midlands band The Charlatans. Arriving too late to be truly considered part of the Madchester scene in nearby Manchester and too early for Britpop in the mid '90s, their music sat somewhere between the two stylistically. Hitting the Top 20 with swaggering anthems such as 'The Only One I Know', they were soon a staple on the live circuit and festival bills. Overcoming a string of personal tragedies, including the loss of their keyboardist Rob Collins, they enjoyed a resurgence towards the latter half of the decade, scoring back to back Number Ones with their 1995 eponymous LP and follow-up Tellin' Stories and hitting the upper echelons of the hit parade with 1996's 'One to Another'.

Although still the band's figurehead, Burgess has also scored success with a string of solo projects and collaborations, from his album releases to his warts and all autobiography, also called Tellin' Stories.
