Since opening in 1837, the Theatre Royal has been renovated and restored many times. A major fire destroyed the building following a performance of Macbeth in 1899, which saw it re-designed by one of the world’s leading theatre architects, Frank Matcham. Prior to its 175-year anniversary, the theatre underwent a major six-month restoration process to recreate Matcham’s classic 1901 Edwardian design with modern comfort and safety features. The theatre celebrated its 175-year anniversary in 2012 with HRH The Duke of York and Princess Eugenie of York as official Royal guests. The Royal guests visited the historic theatre and its recently restored auditorium and were informed of the theatre’s distinguished past.
