The Sound of Music is set in Salzburg, Austria, in the late 1930s. It tells the story of Maria, a young woman who has recently entered the Nonnberg Abbey with the intention of becoming a nun. Although the nuns love her, Maria doesn't fit in. She's loud, energetic and loves to sing and spend time in the hills near the Abbey. The Mother Abbess decides the best thing to do is cast Maria away from the convent for a while and finds her a job as a nanny. Maria arrives at the home of naval captain Georg von Trapp to find that his seven children are living under military discipline. They march, wear uniforms, respond to orders and whistles and never play. Maria quickly wins the children's hearts through her playful spirit and singing. Thanks to Maria, life becomes much more fun for the von Trapp children. After some time away from home, Captain von Trapp is alarmed by the changes to his household. But when he hears his children singing to his prospective wife, Elsa Schräder, he is happy to have music back in his home. Maria and Captain von Trapp become closer, but Maria is worried and confused by her feelings and returns to the convent. The Abbess discovers that Maria's heart is not really set on becoming a nun, so she advises her to take a risk and share her feelings with Captain von Trapp. While Maria was away from the family, the children began performing in public. After marrying Captain von Trapp, the family starts performing together. But things have begun to change in Austria--Nazism is spreading and war is looming. The von Trapp family has to find a way to escape before it's too late.
